Editor’s Note: These Bowe Family Trees are drawn from the family history book of my mother, Mary Gwinn Bowe, The Families, and the genealogy volume Descendants of Anthony Canavan and Ann Hughes. These works were compiled over many years by my mother, Canavan descendant Joseph Christopher Hart, and myself.

Ellen Frances Canavan was one of five daughters of Anthony Canavan, Sr. and Ann Hughes. In addition, seven of eight sons survived into adulthood. But it was Ellen Canavan that made the connection between the Canavan and Bowe families.

Ellen Canavan, known in her family as Lib, was born December 21, 1861, in Sumner, Kankakee, Illinois. She died in Chicago June 29, 1943, at the age of 81 and was buried in Calvary Cemetery in Evanston, Illinois.

At the age of 29, Ellen Frances married John Joseph Bowe on May 12, 1891, in Kankakee, Illinois, when he was 29 years old. John Bowe was born in Illinois February 19, 1862 and was the son of Moses Bowe and Hanora Hurley. John Bowe reached 48 years of age and died in Chicago, Illinois October 10, 1910. He was buried in Mount Carmel Cemetery in Hillside, Illinois.

John and Ellen Canavan Bowe had three children: Augustine, William and Anna.

Augustine Joseph Bowe, known as Gus or Gussie, was born in Chicago February 26, 1892. His prominence as a public figure led both the New York Times and Chicago Daily News took note when he died while on an evening walk on February 6, 1966, at the age of 73.

William John Bowe, Sr., known as Bill, was born in Chicago December 24, 1893. He died in Chicago on December 30, 1965, at the age of 72.

Anna Regis Bowe (Walters) was born in Chicago on August 18, 1896.

William John Bowe, Sr. was born at home on Christmas Eve, December 24, 1893, at 1024 West Superior Street, Chicago, Illinois.

William John died of Alzheimer’s disease at St. Joseph Hospital in Chicago on December 30, 1965, at the age of 72. He was buried in Calvary Cemetery, Evanston, Illinois.

At the age of 34, William John married Mary Agnes Gwinn on June 14, 1928, in Chicago when she was 27 years old.

Mary Agnes was born in Baltimore, Maryland March 13, 1901. She was the daughter of Richard Lawrence Gwinn, Jr. and Mary (Mamie) Agnes Roche. Mary Agnes reached 77 years of age and died of colon cancer in Northwestern University Hospital in Chicago on March 7, 1979. She was buried in Calvary Cemetery, Evanston. William John Bowe Sr. and Mary Agnes Gwinn had two sons:

Richard Gwinn Bowe was born in Chicago on June 22, 1938. He died in Chicago on September 1, 2019, at the age of 81.

William John Bowe, Jr. was born in Passavent (Northwestern) Hospital in Chicago on June 23, 1942.

Richard Gwinn Bowe married Ann Fauble (Mather) in 1963 in Chicago. Ann was born in Chicago onOctober 25, 1939.

Richard Gwinn and Ann Fauble had twins, a boy, Anson and a girl, Alexandra.

Anson Patrick Bowe was born in Chicago on March 14, 1964.

Alexandra Louise Bowe (De Rosa) was also born in Chicago on March 14, 1964.

Richard Gwinn Bowe married Greta Edwards June 21, 1979 in Chicago.  They are divorced.

William John Bowe, Jr. married Judith Arndt in June 24, 1974 at The Glessner House, Chicago. Judith was born in Rock Island, Illinois on December 12,1946. They were divorced in June, 1977.

At the age of 37, William John Bowe, Jr., known as Bill, married Catherine Louise Vanselow on November 10, 1979, in Arts Club, then located at 109 East Ontario Street in Chicago. Catherine Vanselow, known as Cathy, was 29 years old. Catherine Louise was born in St. John’s Hospital, Springfield on August 1, 1950. She is the daughter of Harold Richard Vanselow, Sr. and Bernice Schuster.

William and Catherine Bowe have two sons: Andrew and Patrick:

Andrew Michael Bowe was born in at the Prentis Pavillion of Northwestern Hospital in Chicago on July 2, 1980.

Patrick David Bowe was born at Vanderbilt Hospital in Nashville, Tennessee, on April 1985.
