Editor’s Note: Stan Freborg recalls his service as a reconnaissance officer in the U.S. Army Air Force in December, 1943 in Bari, Italy. While on leave from the nearby airbase in Foggia, he was harborside in Bari when the German Luftwaffe attack Allied ships in the harbor. An ammunition ship with mustard gas was hit, together with many other ships and shore facilities. He took pictures of the carnage with his Leica camera at the time. Charley Bowe later provided me copies of the extraordinary photographs Stan returned with.
