Editor’s Note: In April, 1986, John Bowe pickup up his mother Julia Lecour Bowe from the Maryhaven Nursing Home in Glenview and drove her to his home in nearby Winnetka to celebrate her 85th birthday.  Celebrating in the backyard were John, Kathie and Andy Bowe, as well as Willard Thompson and Stan Freborg, who had married Julia’s sister Dodie.  Happy Birthday was sung, followed by Stan Freborg showing five year-old Andy a disappearing nickel trick.  This was the same slight of hand that had confounded my brother Dick and me when I was about Andy’s age and Stan and Dodie briefly lived in an apartment above Gus and Julia Bowe’s on Elm Street in Chicago.
