Divided on D-Day – Edward E. Gordon
Editor’s Note: In launching the revised edition of his World War II book, Cliff Dweller Edward Gordon took the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the June 6, 1944 Allied Forces attack on the Nazi Fortress Europe by landing the largest armada of ships, troops, and aircraft ever assembled for an invasion. In his illustrated talk, Gordon presented a cogent analysis of the myriad obstacles the Allied leaders faced in the planning and execution of the Normandy campaign. He also focuses on the conflicting egos, personal and national rivalries, and professional abilities of the major Allied commanders.
We learn that their not infrequent lack of cooperation and bad decisions lengthened the war, increased casualties, and allowed the later Soviet domination of Eastern Europe. Ed Gordon provides many insightful answers to the many controversies surrounding the Normandy campaign. Ed’s Divided on D-Day’s coauthor is the late David Ramsay, the son of Admiral Sir Bertram Ramsay who was the naval-commander-in-chief for the Normandy Invasion and who earlier directed the Dunkirk evacuation.
