Sous l&rsquo;impulsion de Garland, le club masculin \u00ab\u00a0Attic\u00a0\u00bb voit le jour en 1907. Deux ans plus tard, le club est rebaptis\u00e9 \u00ab\u00a0The Cliff Dwellers\u00a0\u00bb et s&rsquo;installe aux deux derniers \u00e9tages du nouveau b\u00e2timent Orchestra Hall.  <\/p>\n<p>Les femmes \u00e9taient devenues une partie importante des Cliff Dwellers lorsque le Club a perdu son bail au sommet d&rsquo;Orchestra Hall en 1996. Le po\u00e8me de Garland d\u00e9crit avec pr\u00e9cision le Club, \u00e0 l&rsquo;\u00e9poque et aujourd&rsquo;hui, comme une oasis de calme et un lieu o\u00f9 l&rsquo;appr\u00e9ciation artistique et la bonne entente pr\u00e9valent encore \u00e0 c\u00f4t\u00e9 de la vie commerciale comp\u00e9titive de la grande ville qui se trouve juste \u00e0 l&rsquo;ext\u00e9rieur des portes du Club. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Voici le verset de Garland datant de 1910 :  <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><em>Nous sommes des guerriers, mais d&rsquo;une autre mani\u00e8re.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Des rivaux pour la richesse, le bonheur et la c\u00e9l\u00e9brit\u00e9,<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>  Dans les profondeurs de la ville, nous nous rencontrons sauvagement,<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>et jouer de notre mieux le jeu \u00e9go\u00efste et sordide.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Mais ici,<\/strong> <strong>en paix, devant <\/strong><strong>ces <\/strong><strong>braises incandescentes,<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>de r\u00e9pondre \u00e0 la conception hospitali\u00e8re de cette ample coupe,<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>L&rsquo;homme salue son prochain et ne se souvient qu&rsquo;ensuite,<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Le lien magique de la lumi\u00e8re de l&rsquo;art, <\/strong><strong>et <\/strong><strong>beaut\u00e9, sanctuaire exsangue.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Lectures du roman de Hamlin Garland <em><u>Rose of Dutcher&rsquo;s Coolly<\/u><\/em>)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Chapitre XV &#8211; Chicago<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Quelque part devant elle, cette puissante ruche d&rsquo;un million et demi de personnes. \u00c0 cette id\u00e9e, son c\u0153ur battait la chamade et sa gorge se remplissait. Elle y allait, le lac y \u00e9tait, l&rsquo;art y \u00e9tait, la musique et le th\u00e9\u00e2tre &#8211; et l&rsquo;amour ! Toujours sous chaque \u00e9motion, toujours derri\u00e8re chaque succ\u00e8s, il y avait la compr\u00e9hension que l&rsquo;amour devait \u00eatre la r\u00e9compense et la r\u00e9tribution de la femme. Cette pens\u00e9e n&rsquo;\u00e9tait ni articul\u00e9e ni f\u00e9brile ; c&rsquo;\u00e9tait une \u00e9motion profonde et pure, toujours tourn\u00e9e vers l&rsquo;inconnu. Elle r\u00eavait pendant que le train grondait. Elle r\u00e9ussirait, elle <em>devait <\/em>r\u00e9ussir. Elle saisit la barre du si\u00e8ge de ses mains larges et fortes, et s&rsquo;arc-bouta comme quelqu&rsquo;un qui entre dans une inondation.       <\/p>\n<p>C&rsquo;\u00e9tait encore cette chose merveilleuse, une \u00e2me fra\u00eeche, jeune et puissante se pr\u00e9cipitant vers une grande ville, un atome d&rsquo;acier brillant ob\u00e9issant \u00e0 l&rsquo;aimant, un ruisseau limpide des collines se pr\u00e9cipitant vers la mer. Dans tous les trains, \u00e0 la m\u00eame heure, de toutes les directions, d&rsquo;autres personnes, comme elle, se lan\u00e7aient dans la m\u00eame qu\u00eate, vers le m\u00eame but. <\/p>\n<p>\u00ab\u00a0Quelqu&rsquo;un a dit : \u00ab\u00a0Vous voyez ce nuage ? c&rsquo;est Chicago\u00a0\u00bb.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Chapitre XVI &#8211; Une nouvelle conqu\u00eate<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Un vent d&rsquo;est frais et vif s&rsquo;\u00e9tait lev\u00e9, pur et exaltant, et l&rsquo;\u00e9tendue lisse d&rsquo;eau verte et bleue scintillante s&rsquo;\u00e9tendait sous un ciel bleu vif, dans lequel de grands nuages flottaient comme des montagnes de neige, tra\u00e7ant de grandes ombres comme des robes d&rsquo;apparat sur le lac. La paroi incurv\u00e9e du lac \u00e9tait mouill\u00e9e et scintillait sous les embruns&#8230; La jeune fille sentit son \u00e2me s&rsquo;agrandir face \u00e0 cette sc\u00e8ne si \u00e9trange, si orientale, et elle la regarda encore et encore, jusqu&rsquo;\u00e0 ce qu&rsquo;elle devienne une partie d&rsquo;elle-m\u00eame. <\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Chapitre XVII &#8211; Son premier d\u00eener en ville<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Rose est all\u00e9e voir les parties de la ville qu&rsquo;aucun vrai Chicagoan ne visite jamais. C&rsquo;est-\u00e0-dire qu&rsquo;elle a pass\u00e9 le dimanche dans le parc, admirant avec une force path\u00e9tique la pelouse, les all\u00e9es sinueuses, les ponts et les statues, en compagnie d&rsquo;une multitude humble et sans nom &#8211; elle s&rsquo;est m\u00eame press\u00e9e pour voir les animaux. <\/p>\n<p>Autour d&rsquo;elle affluent les nouveaux habitants de la ville, commis, comptables, typographes, vendeuses, bouchers, vendeurs, tous fra\u00eechement d\u00e9barqu\u00e9s des petites villes et des fermes de l&rsquo;Ouest.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00c0 propos de <a href=\"https:\/\/wbowe.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">William J. Bowe<\/a>:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>N\u00e9 et \u00e9lev\u00e9 \u00e0 Chicago, <strong>William<\/strong> <strong>J.<\/strong> <strong>Bowe<\/strong> a fr\u00e9quent\u00e9 l&rsquo;\u00e9cole latine de la ville et a obtenu son dipl\u00f4me universitaire \u00e0 l&rsquo;universit\u00e9 de Yale. Apr\u00e8s avoir quitt\u00e9 le secteur priv\u00e9 en 1979, Bill a entam\u00e9 une longue carri\u00e8re en tant qu&rsquo;avocat g\u00e9n\u00e9ral de plusieurs entreprises, dont une appartenant \u00e0 un directeur actif au sein de la nouvelle fondation MacArthur, le service de presse United Press International et l&rsquo;Encyclopaedia Britannica. Au cours des 28 ann\u00e9es qu&rsquo;il a pass\u00e9es en tant que vice-pr\u00e9sident ex\u00e9cutif et conseiller juridique de Britannica, Bill a contribu\u00e9 \u00e0 la transition de l&rsquo;\u00e9diteur de r\u00e9f\u00e9rences imprim\u00e9es, vieux de 250 ans, vers son avenir consid\u00e9rablement \u00e9largi en tant qu&rsquo;\u00e9diteur bas\u00e9 sur l&rsquo;internet.
