En effet, Britannica venait de mettre la touche finale \u00e0 la r\u00e9\u00e9criture massive de son <em>encyclop\u00e9die Britannica<\/em> en ajoutant lorsque les premiers disques de stockage CD- ROM (pour Compact Disc-Read Only Memory) sont sortis, Britannica. En 1985, Britannica venait de mettre la touche finale \u00e0 sa r\u00e9\u00e9criture massive, sur plusieurs d\u00e9cennies, de l&rsquo;ensemble de sa14<sup>e<\/sup> \u00e9dition de 1928. La15<sup>e<\/sup> \u00e9dition avait \u00e9t\u00e9 publi\u00e9e \u00e0 l&rsquo;origine en 1974 dans un coffret de 30 volumes. Puis, en 1988 et 1989, le projet de d\u00e9veloppement de l&rsquo;encyclop\u00e9die multim\u00e9dia de Compton a donn\u00e9 naissance au brevet du syst\u00e8me de recherche multim\u00e9dia Britannica. Enfin, avec la d\u00e9livrance du premier brevet en 2002, et la poursuite de la proc\u00e9dure de brevetage les ann\u00e9es suivantes, le d\u00e9cor \u00e9tait plant\u00e9 pour que Britannica puisse exploiter plus pleinement ses r\u00e9alisations. Le po\u00e8te anglais Alexander Pope commence la deuxi\u00e8me \u00e9p\u00eetre de son ouvrage de 1732, An Essay on Man, par le couplet suivant,<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">\u00ab\u00a0Connais-toi donc toi-m\u00eame, ne pr\u00e9sume pas que Dieu te scrute ; La v\u00e9ritable \u00e9tude de l&rsquo;humanit\u00e9 est l&rsquo;homme.\u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n<p>La forme encyclop\u00e9dique symbolise et concr\u00e9tise la volont\u00e9 de se comprendre et de cataloguer ses connaissances, inscrite dans notre g\u00e9nome. L&rsquo;histoire longue et ininterrompue de l&rsquo;encyclop\u00e9die dans notre civilisation est la preuve que notre besoin collectif d&rsquo;auto-examen est ancr\u00e9 dans notre cerveau. Ainsi, la pr\u00e9sence d&rsquo;un \u00e9diteur de r\u00e9f\u00e9rence au centre d&rsquo;un d\u00e9veloppement critique d&rsquo;interface homme\/machine dans les ann\u00e9es 1980 n&rsquo;\u00e9tait pas enti\u00e8rement un accident. Il s&rsquo;explique en partie par la nature m\u00eame des encyclop\u00e9dies dans la soci\u00e9t\u00e9 moderne.<\/p>\n<p>Le mot \u00ab\u00a0encyclop\u00e9die\u00a0\u00bb vient des mots grecs enkyklios, qui signifie g\u00e9n\u00e9ral, et paideia, qui signifie \u00e9ducation L&rsquo;effort pour cr\u00e9er un syst\u00e8me de connaissances ou un cercle d&rsquo;apprentissage sous la forme d&rsquo;une \u00ab\u00a0encyclop\u00e9die\u00a0\u00bb couvrant les connaissances de l&rsquo;humanit\u00e9 existe depuis plus de 2 000 ans, bien qu&rsquo;il n&rsquo;ait pas toujours \u00e9t\u00e9 appel\u00e9 ainsi. Speusippus, qui est mort en 339 avant J.-C., a consign\u00e9 la pens\u00e9e de son oncle Platon sur l&rsquo;histoire naturelle, les math\u00e9matiques et la philosophie.
